Law firm SEO: what clients search, and what your website has to do

Law firm SEO is being found when someone searches for your kind of lawyer in your town. Most of it is on your site: a page for each practice titled the way clients search, a page for each attorney, a page for each town, and structured data that tells Google what you do and where. The rest is off it: your Google Business Profile, reviews and links. Below, what clients actually search in each practice, from Google's own numbers.

Search data: Google Ads search volume and CPC via DataForSEO (OpenSEO), United States, monthly, September 2026.

What clients search, by practice

Monthly searches across the client searches we measured for each practice, the three biggest, and the most an advertiser pays for one click in that practice. The price of the click is the value of ranking for it instead.

Attorney or lawyer? It depends on the practice

Google counts "estate planning attorney" and "estate planning lawyer" as different searches, and clients don't split them the same way in every practice. A practice page titled with the smaller noun is titled for the smaller search.

The bigger searchThe smaller oneThe kit's h1
estate planning attorney 368,000estate planning lawyer 246,000Estate planning attorney in {town}
probate attorney 60,500probate lawyer 27,100Estate planning attorney in {town}

Use the bigger noun in the page's title and h1, and the other in the text; Google matches both, but the title is what ranks first. The last column is the h1 each kit ships with.

What your website does

The part of SEO that lives on your own site. Each item is something every law firm kit on this site already does; whichever theme you use, check yours for it.

  • A page for each practice, titled for the search

People search for the matter ("car accident lawyer", "probate attorney"), not for "practice areas". Every kit has at least 8 practice pages, each titled with its practice's own noun, and an h1 built from the bigger one (the table above).

  • A page for each attorney

Google asks whether it's clear who is behind the content, and encourages accurate authorship information. Every kit has a page per attorney with bar admissions, education and the practices they handle, linked both ways. The kits' sample attorneys are invented and their photographs generated: replace every one with your own people before you launch, because Google calls fabricated profiles, "AI-generated headshots, made-up names", a form of deception.1

  • Structured data

LegalService structured data (name, phone, address, areas served) on every page, and FAQPage data from every FAQ, so Google reads what the firm is and where without guessing.

  • A page for each town

A page per town with real local detail ranks where a list of names doesn't. Every kit ships 5 town pages to rewrite for yours.

  • Guides that answer the question first

People search the question before the lawyer. Every kit has 5 to 8 guides ("How long does a divorce take?", "After an arrest: what happens in the first 72 hours"), each leading to its practice page.

  • Your details, the same everywhere

Name, address, phone and hours set once and identical on every page, so they match your Google Business Profile and directory listings.

  • A fast site

Built from core WordPress blocks and theme.json, with no page builder, so phones get pages without a page builder's scripts and styles.

What your website can't do

No theme does these, ours included. They're where most of an agency's monthly fee goes.

  • Your Google Business Profile

The map results come from it, not from your site. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and how well known the business is; fill in every field, choose the right categories, and keep the hours true.2

  • Reviews

Google says "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking". Ask clients when the matter closes, answer every review, and check your bar's rules on testimonials before you put reviews on your site.2

  • Links and listings

Google counts "how many websites link to your business" as part of how well known it is. Bar association and court-appointed lists, local organizations you belong to, and the legal directories (Avvo, Justia, FindLaw and Best Lawyers all rank on page one for "attorney websites" and "best lawyer websites") are where most firms' links come from.2

  • Time

Hennessey Digital puts it at three to twelve months before rankings and traffic follow; Google doesn't publish a timeline. A new site with the right pages starts the clock, it doesn't finish it.3

If you hire an agency

  1. Who owns the site and the content if you leave? Get it in writing.
  2. Will they report calls, forms and signed cases, not just rankings and traffic?
  3. Who writes the practice pages, and do they know the practice?
  4. Which searches will they target for each practice, and with which noun?
  5. How do they handle the bar's rules on results, testimonials and the word "specialist"?
  6. What is in the monthly fee, and what is billed on top (links, content, ads)?

What agencies charge, as published (checked October 2026)

  • Hennessey Digital puts SEO at $2,500 to $10,000+ a month "depending on the scope", against $5,000 to $50,000+ for Google Ads; its estimates run from $2,000–$6,000 for basic SEO in one practice and one market, to $6,000–$12,000 a month to dominate one market and $12,000–$60,000 a month for more.3
  • Clio's guide says law firm SEO services "typically cost law firms between a few thousand to $10,000, $15,000, or more a month".4
  • Most agencies on page one don't publish a price. Rankings.io, for one, builds pricing "in the discovery call"; Exults, Juris Digital and LawRank list none on their SEO pages.5

Law firm SEO questions

How long does law firm SEO take?

Hennessey Digital puts it at three to twelve months before rankings and traffic follow; Google doesn't publish a timeline. It depends on the practice, the town and how many firms are competing for the same searches. The on-site pages are the part you can finish this month; reviews and links build over time.

How much does law firm SEO cost?

Hennessey Digital publishes $2,500 to $10,000+ a month depending on scope, and estimates up to $60,000 a month for firms targeting several markets; Clio's guide says a few thousand to $10,000–$15,000 or more a month. Most agencies don't publish prices. The on-site half comes with the site you build.

Can I do SEO for my law firm myself?

The on-site half, yes: a page for each practice titled for the search, a page for each attorney, town pages, guides, and your details the same everywhere. The kits ship all of it, with at least 8 practice pages each. The Google Business Profile and reviews you can do yourself too; links take the longest.

Does a law firm need a blog for SEO?

It needs guides: short pages that answer the questions clients search before they call, each leading to a practice page. A blog of firm news rarely ranks for anything a client searches.

What is local SEO for lawyers?

Being found in the map results and the local searches ("divorce lawyer near me", "estate planning attorney in Springfield"). It's your Google Business Profile, reviews and listings off your site, and town pages and consistent details on it.

Does AI search change law firm SEO?

It adds a place to be quoted. On every search about law firm websites we checked in October 2026, Google showed an AI Overview first. Those summaries quote pages that answer the question plainly and early, which is what practice pages and guides should do anyway.
