Plumber SEO: what customers search, and what your website has to do

Plumber SEO is being found when someone near you searches for the job you do. Part of it is on your site: a page for each service titled the way people search, a page for each town, and structured data that tells Google what you do and where. Part of it is off your site: your Google Business Profile, reviews and links. How much each part matters depends on the kind of plumbing business, and the numbers below, from Google's own search data, show it.

What customers search, by kind of plumbing business

Monthly searches across the customer searches we measured for each kind of plumbing business, the three biggest, the most an advertiser pays for one click, and how much of it is "near me". The price of the click is the value of ranking for it instead.

Google Ads search volume and CPC via DataForSEO (OpenSEO), United States, monthly, September 2026. Close variants Google reports with the same volume are counted once. “Top click” is the highest cost per click among its searches. “Near me” is the share of those searches that end in “near me”.

"Near me" or the job? It depends on the business

A "near me" search is answered by the map first, and the map comes from your Google Business Profile. A search for the job ("garbage disposal repair") is answered by the page about that job. The share of each kind's searches that say "near me":

  • Emergency51%
  • Bathroom remodel35%
  • Drain and sewer34%
  • Commercial19%
  • Local family10%

About half of emergency searches say "near me": someone with water on the floor wants whoever is closest and open, so the profile's hours, reviews and phone number decide the call. A local family plumber's customers mostly search the job, so the service pages do more of the work. Water heater searches aren't in the chart because no "near me" water heater search was measured; that isn't zero.

What your website does

The part of SEO that lives on your own site. Each item is something every plumber kit on this site already does; whichever theme you use, check yours for it.

  • A page for each service, titled for the search

People search for the job ("drain cleaning", "water heater replacement"), not for "services". Every kit has at least 10 service pages, each titled with the phrase people type.

  • A page for each town

A page per town with real local detail ranks where a list of names doesn't, and "near me" searches lean on knowing where you work. Every kit ships 5 town pages to rewrite for yours.

  • Structured data

Plumber structured data (name, phone, address, areas served) on every page, and FAQPage data from every FAQ, so Google reads what the business is and where.

  • Guides that answer the problem first

People search the problem before the plumber. Every kit has 3 to 5 guides ("How to shut off the water to your house", "How old is your water heater?"), each leading to its service page.

  • Your details, the same everywhere

Name, address, phone, hours and license line set once and identical on every page, so they match your Google Business Profile and directory listings.

  • A form that keeps the lead

The free Groundwork Local plugin saves every form message under Leads in WordPress before emailing it, so a lead from a page that ranks isn't lost when a host's email fails.

  • A fast site

Built from core WordPress blocks and theme.json, with no page builder, so phones get pages without a page builder's scripts and styles.

  • Your Google Business Profile

The map results come from it, not from your site. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and how well known the business is; choose the right categories, keep the hours true (24/7 only if you answer at 3am), and add every service.1

  • Reviews

Google says "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking". Ask when the job is done and the customer is relieved, and answer every review.1

  • Links and listings

Google counts "how many websites link to your business" as part of how well known it is. Local directories, the supplier and manufacturer dealer locators you qualify for, and local organizations you belong to are where most plumbers' links come from.1

  • Time

A new site with the right pages starts the clock; reviews and links build over months. Google doesn't publish a timeline.

If you hire an agency

  1. Who owns the site and the content if you leave? Get it in writing.
  2. Will they report calls and booked jobs, not just rankings and traffic?
  3. Which searches will they target for each service and town?
  4. Will they work on the Google Business Profile and reviews, or only the website?
  5. What is in the monthly fee, and what is billed on top (links, content, ads)?

What agencies charge, as published (checked October 2026)

  • SEO Ninja says "SEO services for plumbers typically range from $750 to $3,000 per month, depending on the competitiveness of your market, the size of your service area, and the scope of work involved".2
  • iBoost offers SEO for plumbing companies "as low as $299/mo".3

For agencies

Building plumbing sites for clients? Every kit here is the on-site half above, done: the service pages, town pages, guides, structured data and a form that keeps the lead, in a WordPress block theme you can hand over. The Agency plan covers unlimited client sites.

Plumber SEO questions

How long does plumber SEO take?

Google doesn't publish a timeline, and it depends on your town and how many plumbers compete for the same searches. The on-site pages are the part you can finish this month; reviews and links build over months.

How much does SEO for plumbers cost?

SEO Ninja publishes $750 to $3,000 a month for plumbers, depending on the market and the scope; iBoost advertises plans from $299 a month. Most agencies don't publish a price. The on-site half comes with the site you build.

Can I do SEO for my plumbing business myself?

The on-site half, yes: a page for each service titled for the search, a page for each town, guides, and your details the same everywhere. The kits ship all of it, with 10 service pages each. The Google Business Profile and asking for reviews you can do yourself too.

What matters most for an emergency plumber?

The Google Business Profile. About half of emergency plumbing searches say "near me", and those are answered by the map first: true hours, the right categories, reviews and a phone that's answered. Then an emergencies page on your site that says how fast you come.

Do plumbers need a blog for SEO?

They need guides: short pages that answer the problem people search ("water heater leaking", "how to unclog a drain"), each leading to the service page. A blog of company news rarely ranks for anything a customer searches.

Does AI search change plumber SEO?

It adds a place to be quoted. Google showed an AI Overview first on most of the plumbing website searches we checked in October 2026, and those summaries quote pages that answer plainly and early, which is what service pages and guides should do anyway.
